Starting in 2014, individuals and families can receive a health insurance subsidy in the form of a new premium tax credit to help them make health insurance coverage affordable. To qualify for the subsidy the consumer must purchase a qualified health insurance plan (QHP) through a federal or state based Insurance Exchange. The premium tax credit is refundable so it can still benefit individuals who have little or no income tax liability. The credit also can be paid in advance to a taxpayer’s insurance company to help them cover the cost of premiums.
